PARC was founded in 1953 with the goal of helping adults and children with developmental disabilities live life to the fullest. To provide its wide range of programs, PARC relies heavily on the work of volunteers. More than 40 programs need volunteer support, including the PARC Thrift Store, the Margaret E. Dickens Children’s Technology Center and the ATAC Adult Technology Achievement Center. In addition, the organization regularly seeks out volunteers 16 and older to help at such special events as the PARC Annual Black Tie Gala and Tampa Bay Blues Festival. With such a wide range of opportunities, PARC welcomes volunteers with all types of skill sets and interests. They assist with everything from clerical support to interacting with senior citizens and children, and just need to be enthusiastic and motivated to help. All volunteers must complete an orientation and undergo a background screening before starting their work. PARC requires no minimum volunteer hours per week and is happy to work around volunteers’ schedules. Some can opt for a regular time each week, while others may prefer working on an as-needed basis.

The University of Tennessee offers an engineering program that provides a long tradition of training students to become professional engineers. The university has nine research centers around the country, and includes more than 100 laboratories. The College of Engineering program began in 1838, and had been educating students for more than 150 years by the time Cliff Davis graduated in 1990. The University of Tennessee at Knoxville was founded in 1794 and is known as a public research institution. Among its many departments are a Space Institute and Health Science Center. The main mission of the university is to “move forward the frontiers of human knowledge.” Clifford J. Davis is an accomplished self-employed developer. Based in Tampa, FL, Cliff Davis has built and owned more than 220,000 square feet of commercial space, and has completed $18 million in horizontal site work and 56,000 square feet of general office space during his career. When he’s not busy with his professional responsibilities, Cliff Davis of Tampa, FL enjoys running. How humidity affects you while running largely depends on your experience. If you have run in humid conditions before, you likely will be able to handle it better than someone who have never done it. For most people, humidity increases the risk of overheating more than running in a dry heat does. The reason for this is that the evaporation of sweat, a critical part of the body’s cooling process, is slower on a humid day. Although this can be mitigated by wearing clothes that remove sweat and promote drying, humidity still affects your overall running performance. High levels of humidity are most likely to increase your heart rate and quicken your dehydration during a run. Further, if you are running in high heat and humidity, you will also experience some decreases in performance based on how accustomed you are to a more humid environment. As an avid sports enthusiast and triathlete, Clifford J Davis of Tampa, FL, participates in many Spartan events and Olympic distance competitions, including the Top Gun Triathlon. The triathlon limits the number of participants to 1,000 and has been held each year since it began in 2000. The triathlon is a popular event that sells out long before race day. Taking place at Fort De Soto Park at North Beach in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Top Gun Triathlon is the largest event for sprint triathlons in the greater Tampa Bay area. One of the toughest triathlon courses in the world, the Ironman World Championship course in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, has athletes swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles. The competition starts with a swim at the east of the Kailua Pier. An elongated rectangle, the course stretches south for 1.2 miles before directing competitors back to the pier. The start line is 60 yards from the shore. Athletes swim following a clockwise route extending out to the turnaround buoy before returning. Water temperatures can reach up to 79 degrees Fahrenheit, and currents may vary. The cycling course begins at the end of the swimming course at Kailua Pier. After cycling up Palani Road, athletes take rights at Kuakini Highway, then Makala Boulevard, and finally at Queen Kaahumanu Highway leading back to Palani Road. The terrain has several hills stretching up to a mile. Winds along the course vary in intensity from light breezes to heavy blasts that can blow cyclists off track. For the marathon that is the last part of the race, athletes run up Palani Road before making several turns to Hualalai Road, then to Alii Drive, then south to the first turnaround at St. Peters Church. Athletes then head north back to Palani Road, snaking their way through several highways to get there, before turning right into Hualalai Road and then right into Alii Drive to the finish line. The course exposes athletes to high heat and high humidity. Clifford “Cliff” J. Davis of Tampa, FL, works throughout the state of Florida as a real estate developer.
